A day off for me, which actually means I didn't go into Tokyo. lol
It was finally a nice warm day, and lucky for me I had a day that I did not need to take the hour long train ride into the city. First stop was beachside restaurant, surfers in Zushi. A great place to eat and watch the Kites and Crows dance around each other like fighter pilots, but today was just a glass of red and time spent looking out over the smooth ocean surface. It looks over one of the best right hand point breaks in the area. But today the tide was so low that reef was showing. The tide was going out so the urchins were still doing their best to go down with the tide. The owner Naruse was there, and the man is constantly working. He will be talking to you with a Corona in his left hand but his right hand would be arranging something on the table or even writing down notes. The man does not take a break. He shows up every morning in his casuals, but once he puts on his sneakers, he is all business.
After an hour of enjoying the view, it was time to go over the hill to the little fishing village of Kotsubo and a visit to my favorite hang. Negishi, the resort shop, to shoot the breeze with Ojisan and the wonderful hula dancer Rie. I get a can of Otokoume and a bag of Lay’s potato chips and a package of dried seaweed to complement my drink. Negishi is actually a liquor shop, in the old vein, selling groceries and flowers, but when the sign was ordered, it came back saying resort shop and not liquor shop, so it went up anyway. Kotsubo sits next to the high end resort Zushi Marina, so perhaps the sign maker got it confused. Kotsubo has telephone poles instead of the palm trees that line the streets of Zushi Marina.
My next stop was the Jazz Club Daphne to check out the sound system to see what we need to broadcast live from the venue. We will be broadcasting live Jazz from there that can be heard anywhere in the world. Young Jazz cats, hopefully on their way up. We listened to a set by Jazz Vocalist Ryutaro Makino, actually one of the owners of the club.
Next up was The Bar Tipple to discuss a gig I will be working on with them. The owner Sugimoto is one of the very few real bartenders in Kamakura. Of course there are a lot of places that serve cocktails, but Sugimoto is a master. The bar only has a counter, and it is dark, and romantic if that is what you are into. He served me a glass of Talisker Whiskey in a glass with no ice.
All in all, a nice day off. Lol..
